It's from the wild antelope on the great southern plains, that a distinct and
fierce band of Comanche called the Quahadi, took its name. And it's from that
band of skillful hunters that we took our name, Quahadi Wildlife & Ranch
Retreat.
The Retreat is located on a family owned and operated working cattle ranch. One that
began in the fall of 1883 as a homestead on the vast rangeland south of Big Spring
with the Half Circle "L" brand. Only a few years earlier, Quannah Parker's Quahadi
were the last of the Comanche to surrender their territory. L.S. McDowell, Sr. and
his family started with sheep, went on to longhorns and eventually bred up to the
beef cattle that make up the ranch's herds
today.
When you come out to stay with us at the ranch lodge, you'll see the headquarters nearby. You may see a
roundup, branding, weaning, or other cowboy chores going on around you. You'll also see that there are 50,000
acres over which to roam. And plenty of native game and other wildlife.
We believe that the land and all life is entrusted to us from God, our Creator; and that
we, like our forefathers and the Native Americans before them, are stewards of that
trust. We love it, care for it and like to share it with others. That's why we manage the
land with large herds of cattle much like the great roaming herds of buffalo before
L.S., Sr. settled here; grazing and moving on, letting the range rest and renew itself
providing the natural habitat quail, deer, turkey, and other wildlife prefer and flourish
in.
When you come out to visit with us, you'll have access to two different
ranches (one that's crossed by the upper reaches of the Colorado River) plus every
kind of wild game native to these parts. You'll find Bobwhite and Blue Quail,
Mourning Dove, Whitetail Deer and Rio Grande Turkey. You will also find a variety of predators
like bobcat, coyote, fox and the occasional cougar on Panther Draw. We've even
got a few of the descendents of those pronghorn antelope that lent their name
to the Quahadi, as well as a bountiful supply of Sandhill Crane, and some plover
and duck. Maybe the best part of all this is that three generations of the
same family that settled here in a half dugout cabin still own and operate the
ranch. So, if you need special arrangements, we know where to find most everything and can make your trip out here just what you want it to be. We'll put you up
for a day or a week at the ranch, or in town. We'll furnish guides or if you know how to find the
North Star we'll let you guide yourself. We offer just about any variety of package
you can think of, for about any length of time you want, with whatever services you need. We'll even
pick you up at the Midland Air Terminal or the Big Spring Airport. And we'll take you back with a
sack full of wild game for you, your family and your friends to savor - along with your memories.
When you're ready for some adventure and relaxation or just a good hunt with a western
flair, come on out and look us over. We like it here, and we know you will too.
